Baja Screens General FAQ

How do I know which screen to choose?
A member of our Sales Team will visit your home for a consultation and explain the different solutions that we offer.
By listening to your needs and wants, we can develop a custom solution of bug and/or hurricane screens that work perfectly for your home.

How do I place an order?
We will measure the desired openings in your home and generate a customized quote for you within 5 business days. Once you approve the quote, we collect a 50% deposit and place the custom order with our manufacturing partners in the US.
We collect the remaining 50% of the invoice once installation is completed.

How long does it take to get the screens installed?
It takes our manufacturers 8-10 weeks to manufacture the custom screens and have them imported and shipped down to Los Cabos. Once we receive them, we coordinate an installation date with you. Depending on how many screens are being installed, our team may need to be onsite for several days to complete the job. You do not have to be home for the installation but we will need interior and exterior access to your home. We will always communicate each step of the process with you. The overall process from inquiry to installation can take 2-4 months.

What's the tallest screen you can install?
Phantom Retractable Bug Screens: 140 inches high (12 feet)
Defender Motorized Hurricane Screens: 240 inches high (20 feet)
Nautilus Roll-down: 216 inches high (18 feet)
Expert Accordion Vertical Shutters: 240 inches high (20 feet)

What's the widest screen you can install?
Phantom Retractable Bug Screens: 360 inches wide (30 feet)
Defender Hurricane Mesh Screens: 360 inches wide (30 feet)
Nautilus Roll-Down Shutters: 248 inches wide (20 feet)
Expert Accordion Vertical Shutters: No limit to width
SunPro Awnings: Minimum 9ft 6 inch wide, to a max of 40 feet.

My screen is stuck, what do I do?
Before doing anything to try to fix it, please call us and we can diagnose why it may not be functioning properly. We will always send a technician out for service at the earliest opportunity. Case-by-case situations may be subject to a service call fee.
Most importantly, don't try to get it unstuck without calling us first!

Screen Cleaning and Regular Maintenance Instructions
It is important that you perform regular maintenance on your screens to protect your investment and ensure optimal performance.

If you are within one mile of salt water, you should hose down your screens at least once every two weeks to prevent salt build up. Otherwise, hose down your screens once every 6 months. The screens are tough, but they do need to be cleaned to get maximum wear.

A good rule of thumb is to clean your screens whenever your windows need cleaning.
1. A good cleaning solution is 3 gallons of water, 3 good squirts of a mild detergent (Dawn) and a cup of household bleach.
2. Applied with a soft sponge NOT A BRUSH (try a car sponge that has terry-cloth on one side) or sprayed on by a hose attachment.
3. Hose all of the cleaning solution off.
4. Leave in the down position until dry.

Without cleaning, your screens will darken over time because of the dirt and mold in the air.
A cleaning will bring your screen back to factory fresh color.

If your screens are around a cooking area such as an outdoor kitchen or BBQ, the cooking smoke or cooking vapors/steam will be full of grease or other organic food related particles which will cause mold growth on your screens. The growth is not harmful to the screens, but should be cleaned off to preserve the screen's appearance and to keep the screen's holes from closing which in turn will reduce air flow.
To ensure the smooth retraction of your screens, the tracks need to be wiped and lubricated whenever grit or resistance is felt.

LUBRICATING THE SIDE TRACKS:
To ensure the smooth retraction of your screens, the tracks need to be wiped and lubricated whenever grit or resistance is felt.

Dry Lube comes in a spray can and is found at most hardware stores such as Home Depot.

DO NOT use WD40 or any other type of silicon lubricant.
1. Be sure to shake the can for several minutes before spraying in order to mix the can's contents.
2. Raise the screen. Wipe any visible debris from the tracks. With the screen fully raised, spray Dry Lube into the side tracks.
3. If you spray too much, a white "puddle" will form at the bottom of the track which can be removed with a paper towel.
This should be done every time the screens are cleaned or as often as required for easy movement.

Maintaining Your Phantom Screens

Proper maintenance guidelines below will ensure years of worry free service for your screens.
Screens should be retracted into protective storage housing when not in use.
  • Spring loaded systems may retract suddenly. Do not push the mesh to release the magnet or latch. A safety feature releases the slide bar if the mesh is lightly bumped. Continual abuse will affect operation. When rolling the screen into the housing, ensure the mesh rolls evenly. Retracting the product with creases in the screen can cause wrinkles.
  • Motorized screens should be watched during operation. Objects left under a motorized unit can prevent the unit from lowering. If this happens, lift the slide bar up manually, remove the obstacle, and lower the slide bar. If it does not extend to a level position, use the remote up button and roll up the mesh until the slide bar is level. Stop the unit, and then lower it.
  • Interruption of power can affect motorized unit operation. Ensure that power is still getting to the unit by checking circuit breakers and ground faults for resetting. Remotes (in wall and handheld) have a limited battery life. If the remote light does not come on when the buttons are depressed, the battery is exhausted.
  • Insect screens are intended to provide reasonable insect control and are not intended to provide the retention and / or security of objects, animals or persons inside or outside your dwelling.
  • Ensure tracks are kept free of dirt and debris which may cause the screen to perform poorly. Cleaning the tracks and lubricating them with Phantom's greaseless silicone spray can restore smooth operation. DO NOT use oil, grease, petroleum or oil based sprays - which may attract dirt and impair the proper operation of your screen(s).
  • Mesh fabric, housing tracks and slide bar can be cleaned with water and a soft brush but not with a pressure washer. A mild detergent like dish soap can be used, but do not use chemicals. After cleaning the mesh, allow it to dry before rolling it back up into the housing.
  • It is normal for the mesh to "sail" in certain windy conditions. This may cause the mesh to pull out of the track, however when the wind subsides the mesh will return against the track.
